Hearing loss is an emotional rollercoaster, all day long. It leaves us with questions all day long.
For far too long phone calls were a constant struggle until caption phones came out. Captions made a difference and we love InnoCaption. The app has made it a lot easier to connect to family and friends, and place calls to businesses. Thank you to InnoCaption for bringing us back the phone! Wouldn’t it be nice if all of life was captioned so we wouldn’t be asking ourselves the questions day in and day out? A lot of us started using ASR (automatic speech recognition) apps daily during the pandemic because we found out how much we used lipreading. Without seeing the lips, it was suddenly a lot harder to hear even if they spoke louder so we used apps like Otter, AVA and Live Transcribe to get through doctor appointments, through the grocery store, restaurants and more.
Although ASR is helpful, it’s not always usable. The background can be too noisy, there’s too many speakers, there’s too much distance or there isn’t enough wifi or signal for it to work properly. When in a business setting, a lecture or a class, this is the time to request CART/live captioning. InnoCaption sees the value of our CART providers and contracts them to transcribe our personal phone calls and offers conference calls services as well. ASR is getting better all the time but trained CART providers still come out on top.
Sometimes we can use these apps in personal situations and sometimes we can’t. What if it’s a large family gathering? What if our phone isn’t with us, or the battery is dead? Or maybe we have limited minutes with the app? Some people feel self conscious talking to us while we are ‘recording’ so what then?

These concepts benefit everyday communication for the Hard of Hearing. Only a small portion of lipreading communication is the actual lip shapes. The strategies used to lipread are what improve communication issues as a whole. Lipreading Concepts teaches you to be more proactive with your hearing loss (you have to be to lipread) and sheds more light on the strategies that you are probably already using unconsciously, because we all lipread to some degree.
