Dr. Sam Trychin, or as we like to call him, Dr. Sam has dedicated his life to educating those with hearing loss, and friends and family of those within the hard of hearing community. Our Director of Regulatory Affairs & In-House Counsel, Cristina Duarte, had the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Sam to discuss his background, the experiences with members of the hard of hearing community as a result of the pandemic, the state of accessibility in the workplace, and his work in psychology as it relates to the hard of hearing community.
Dr. Sam’s lifetime of work with this community has provided him with a unique perspective in relating to, and understanding the lives of hard of hearing individuals and their family and friends. Below we’ve highlighted just a few features of his experience.
Dr. Sam is the Founder of Living With Hearing Loss, a product of twenty-two over 35 years of experience working directly with hundreds of people who are hard of hearing and their family members. His program is designed to meet the needs of family members, friends, and coworkers in addition to members of the hard of hearing community themselves.
Dr. Sam is also a practicing psychologist in Erie, PA. One of his specialties focuses on psycho-social interventions for people who have hearing loss and their communication partners. As a member of the hard of hearing community himself, he has had the unique opportunity to both relate, and learn from, the individuals with whom he works. His programs include the application of psychological concepts, principles, and procedures to problems and issues related to hearing loss and to stress-related mental health issues.
Dr. Sam serves as the Mental Health and Rehabilitation Advisor for the Hearing Loss Association of America. HLAA is the Nation’s leading organization representing consumers hearing loss with a mission to “open the world of communication to people with hearing loss by providing information, education, support, and advocacy.” Through his experiences with psychology, Dr. Sam is able to contribute his professional expertise to assist in informing, educating, and supporting this community through his specialization in mental health.
In addition to the above, Dr. Sam has been a member of the Pennsylvania Governor’s Advisory Council for Persons who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Dr. Sam has also written an incredibly impressive 15 books, and authored a wide variety of additional content to further the lives of the community he serves.We can’t thank him enough for taking the time to speak with us, and share his experience with the InnoCaption community!
